p.14-p.174 of “Double Double, Protein Style, Animal Style with a Strawberry Shake and Chips” cover the years 1925 to 1941 during Shoichi’s childhood in Kahului, Maui, yet contains no images of Shoichi. As the second oldest of ten siblings, born to Ryuichi Yoshida from Hiroshima and Shizuyo from Maui, he enjoyed swimming in Iao Valley, eating Guri Guri, diving for tako, and playing football at Baldwin High School, earning the nickname “Alabama” from a scholarship offer from Alabama State.

“p.14-p.174” is a supplemental photographic exploration of my grandfather’s life before he was drafted. A token of the places he called home through surveys with distant family.
