p.14 - p.174 of “Double Double, Protein Style, Animal Style with a Strawberry Shake and Chips” covers the years 1925 to 1941 during Shoichi’s childhood in Kahului, Maui, yet contains no images of him. As the second oldest of ten siblings, born to Ryuichi Yoshida from Hiroshima and Shizuyo from Maui, he enjoyed swimming in Iao Valley, eating Guri Guri, diving for tako, and playing football at Baldwin High School, earning the nickname “Alabama” from a scholarship offer from Alabama State. “p.14 - p.174” is a supplemental photographic exploration of my grandfather’s life before he was drafted into WWII. A token of the places he called home through surveys with distant family.

Conlon's book weaves multiple timelines, from the minutes of his grandfather’s waking hours to a photographic archive of his entire life, allowing the viewer to observe and control the subject's passing time. Through systematic collaging, Conlon creates instantaneous moments of then and now and compositions of coincidences that capture life's intimacies.

709 N Hill St. #9, Los Angeles, CA 90012 - 5/15/23, 9:51The 110 weave smells different, Ave 26 Tacos isn't on Ave 26, Fig. St. Tunnels are brighter, our parrots appeared later than usual. There’s a red glass ball, or flaming pearl, that sits upon a dragon inside Asian Plaza. With good timing, you may be able to see the sun shine down through the exterior window arch through said pearl. Today that ball was sitting under some mailboxes while a lady cleaned the dragon. I think about the beehive and question whether or not they took them out before sealing the drainage holes while I watch the red glow of flaming dragon ball light up the bottom of the mail boxes.

A work that marks the beginnings of Wyatt Conlon's cataloged times and recollected bits of his city’s short-lived state. Simply, an attempt to replicate and settle in.
